2000bc vs Current
These rings look like David Yurman Rings. The rope design in gold. But these were worn by the Vikings in 2000BC. Really amazed with the technique back then.

from a small brand idea to big - Alex and Ani goes to Jared
Just to follow up with my previous blog. Alex and Ani is going to Jared. This fast fashion jewelry company came up with the concept of bangles with charms - all SKUs all styles are just charm bangles. You would say how many of that can you do? But they did it!! From ecom site to department stores and now are it is going to a national jewelry chain store!
Thoughts?!?
Thoughts?!?
brands vs. private lables
More and more challenges out there for independent designers to branch out to department stores. Most of the stores are now have private labels and they are going directly to manufactures.
It is all about the niche you have for the market. In the jewelry/accessory world, collections do not seem to be necessary for a designer to have for launching his/her brand any more. It is about AN ITEM. What is that item that no one has? What is the concept that no one has? What is the material that no one has? These are the crucial facts designers need to think about before you launch your brand.
A lot of designers don't think that department stores are the channel for them in this day and age. It is not cool any more but all think that they can get on line or go to boutiques to sell their product. But come back into reality, if you really want to make that profit and make yourself relevant, department stores are still the backbone of designers, no matter if it is high-end stores like Bergdorf Goodman or mass like Kohl's.
My advise is to think through what you can offer to the fast paste fashion world, you might think what you have is special. But in many cases, it is not exactly true.
